Parliament replaces CEC member

Members of parliament from the governing coalition, with the support of four opposition MPs, removed one of the Central Elections Committee members from office late last night, saying he had lied to parliament over being fired when he served as prosecutor.

The removed CEC member had been originally voted in with the support of the Socialist Movement for Integration Party, which recently quit government to join the opposition.

The Democrats withdrew their earlier legal challenge that the move was aimed to restore balance at the CEC, nonetheless achieving the same aim by voting in a representative of the Republican Party, a member of the governing coalition.

The vote came at the end of a marathon session of parliament closely watched by international representatives who had spoken against the move.
